Wood Pellet Certification
Taking into account the quality requirements for wood pellets set out in international standards according to ISO EN 17225-2, most member countries have introduced legal regulations encouraging the possession of quality assurance certificates for wood pellets. The most popular certification scheme, most commonly chosen by wood pellet producers and companies trading in wood pellets, is the ENplus® system.
The Quality Assurance System known as Factory Production Control (FPC) is a system based on defining control points throughout the process—from sourcing and inspecting raw materials, through monitoring the production process and quality control of wood pellets in the factory laboratory, to packaging, storage, and dispatch. Thanks to the FPC system, the producer is able to ensure continuous control, monitoring, and maintenance of consistently high quality of wood pellets.
The requirements described in the ENplus® Certification Scheme cover the entire supply chain of wood pellets—from production and trade to services such as bulk pellet storage, transportation of pellets in tankers, pellet packaging, transshipment, and others.
Implementation
BIOCONTROL is a leader in optimizing processes based on the requirements of the ENplus® Certification Scheme, designed for producers and trading companies supplying wood pellets to end users in the retail market, as well as for the professional energy, heating, and industrial sectors.
BIOCONTROL provides comprehensive support in preparing wood pellet production facilities to meet the requirements of the certification body and to successfully complete the certification process according to European standards. This includes developing the necessary procedures and work instructions, implementing them within the facility, training personnel (administrative, production, and laboratory staff), organizing the in-house laboratory, and preparing the organization for system certification by an authorized Certification Body.
Stages of the Certification Process
As part of the preparation of the facility, the consultant will carry out the following activities, including the development of required procedures and work instructions, implementation of documentation, and training of personnel in the scope of the Factory Production Control (FPC) for wood pellet production to meet the requirements of the ENplus® certification systems.
In addition to the above elements, process optimization will include the development of forms for record-keeping related to FPC activities, such as raw material qualification along with a supplier register, raw material and additives delivery register, production report, packaging report, loading report, and the Mass Balance together with inventory records.
Consultation on the selection of necessary equipment for the in-house laboratory, advisory services regarding the choice and organization of the laboratory equipment, including the preparation of work instructions for the laboratory and training of personnel in testing techniques and record-keeping along with result evaluation. As part of this activity, a system for supervising control and measuring equipment in the facility will be developed, and Equipment Supervision Cards will be established to maintain records.
Our company’s consultant will actively participate in developing the traceability and identification system within the facility to ensure the possibility of recalling any potentially non-compliant product from the market.
During this stage, the consultant will provide guidelines regarding the minimum information that must be included on the pellet bag and will be involved in consultations and the approval process of the design by the European Pellet Council (EPC).
One of the final stages of the preparation process is to register the producer or trading company using the appropriate application form with the European Pellet Council, and to create a Client Panel on the RADIX TREE platform, which serves as a communication interface between the European Pellet Council and the Certification Body.
The certification process is conducted by competent certification bodies that have a certification program and carry out assessments according to the standard selected by you. Biocontrol ensures that the implemented system complies with the requirements of the Certification Body of your choice.
The project concludes with a certification audit conducted by an authorized certification body. The purpose of the certification audit is to confirm compliance with the ENplus® standards. Upon successful completion of the audit, the certification body will issue a certificate confirming that the audited system meets the requirements of the specified certification scheme. The certification body of your choice will assign a certificate number after a successful certification audit, which will then be registered in the database of certified entities maintained by the Certification Scheme Administrator.
